Solyndra System in Zellik at Delhaize

Greg Smestad was called in to evaluate the largest Solyndra plant in the world that went down because of poor operations and maintenance (O&M) for the novel cylindrical PV technology. The 3 megawatt (MW) plant is located on the roof of the Delhaize food distribution center in Zellik, Belgium. As an outside advisor, Dr. Smestad was part of the core technical team that was able diagnose the problem, oversee the retrofits and get it safely back up and running.

The PV panels for the plant were manufactured at Solyndra LLC’s Fab 2 site in Fremont; the company was the first company to receive a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Loan guarantee funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The construction on the manufacturing plant was started in September of 2009. An American Enterprise Institute article outlines the timeline for the company and the linkages between the Belgian plant and the U.S. Ex-Im program.

Solyndra suspended its manufacturing operations August 31, 2011 and subsequently filed a petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code on September 5, 2011. This included filing for insolvency in Switzerland and Germany. The latter arm of the company affected the Zellik plant and left it without effective expertise to continue its maintenance, monitoring and repair.
